Choosing the proper Hearing Protection can be difficult for Safety Professionals in dynamic work environments. Great companies like 3M are giving Safety Professionals tools to help us (Safety Professionals) and our workforces make correct, educated decisions about the employee’s personal safety. Once they know they really do need it, then we can work through the issues of finding the best hearing protection for our workforce from a fit, comfort, and pricing standpoint. The 3M™ Noise Indicator NI-100 looks similar to a personal H2S monitor as you can see in the picture.

Here is the text from the 3M press release on this new personal noise indicator.

“3M LAUNCHES NEW PERSONAL NOISE INDICATOR

- Alerts Users to Potentially Dangerous Noise Levels -

St. Paul, Minn. – January 15, 2010 – 3M expands its passive hearing conservation product line with the introduction of the new 3M™ Noise Indicator NI-100.

The 3M Noise Indicator alerts users to potentially dangerous noise levels, helping them identify areas where they may need to wear hearing protection. Users simply clip the Noise Indicator to a shirt or jacket; its LED light delivers a clear indication when noise levels exceed a potentially hazardous threshold.

? Red Flashing LED: Noise levels are above 85 dBA – hearing protection may be required.

? Green Flashing LED: Noise levels are below 85 dBA – hearing protection may not be necessary.

The Noise Indicator’s small size and lightweight design make it ideal for workers in a variety of industries. With a rechargeable battery that operates for up to 200 hours between charges, it’s an economical investment in your hearing awareness program.

The NI-100 can be used as an effective training tool within a Hearing Conservation Program (consult OSHA Standard 1910.95) to help ensure workers know when and where to wear hearing protection. Industrial Hygienists can also use it as a mapping tool to determine where noise studies are necessary.”

I hope to get one to try it out and give a review of its actual function.
